The aim of this preconference is to examine the reciprocal relationships between health and psychology at a number of different levels of analysis. This year our speakers will cover topics such as the physiological and health effects of different emotions, stress, attitudes and behaviors, as well as a discussion on the important role that genetic factors are playing in social/personality/health research today.
We are fortunate to have Robert Plomin (Keynote Speaker; Professor, King's College London), Lisa Aspinwall (Professor, University of Utah), Kevin Masters (Professor, University of Colorado, Denver; President of Division 38 APA), Paschal Sheeran (Professor, University of North Carolina), Tim Smith (Professor, University of Utah), and Joshua Smyth (Professor, Penn State) who will all present cutting edge research at the intersection of social, personality & health psychology.
This year's preconference will also feature a Genetics Round Table moderated by William Klein (NCI). Leading researchers Robert Plomin, Lisa Aspinwall, Barbara Biesecker, Baldwin Way, & George Slavich will discuss a range of issues at the intersection of genetics and SPH psychology, for example, methodological issues, genetic testing, new research directions in the field, and critiques of this growing area of research. Researchers will discuss their different approaches to studying genetic factors, with plenty of time for discussion and questions from the audience.
And back by popular demand: The Student Data Blitz. Students will have 2 minutes and 2 slides to present one of their research findings. And, for the second time, we will be offering a $500 travel awards to two students with the most outstanding Blitz submissions!
Also for trainees, we will have a lunch time mentoring session where students and post docs will have the opportunity to get advice from experts in health psychology. New this year, will be a Mindware-sponsored lunch table (co-led by Tim Smith) for those individuals especially interested in learning more about psychophysiology (including what's required to get your own lab set up).
This is the sixth social, personality, and health preconference, the fourth organized by the SPH Network. See the 2011 schedule, the 2012 schedule, and the 2013 schedule and program.
We have put together a list of health-related posters and health-related symposia for easier navigation of the conference.
The Early Bird Registration cost of the preconference will be $70 for students and $100 for post-docs/faculty. This includes a continental breakfast, coffee & refreshment breaks, and a buffet lunch. Registration also includes a one year membership to the Social, Personality & Health Network. Early bird registration ends on January 13, 2014, after which point, registration will go up to $80 for students and $110 for others.
You can find us in Ballroom C of the Austin Convention Center.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Robert Plomin, ranked as one of the 100 most eminent psychologists in the history of science, as our keynote lecturer this year. Dr. Plomin is a pioneer in studying the interface between nature and nurture in the study of development, and more generally, his research and writing have been critical in bringing genetics into the mainstream of psychology. His research has shown the importance of genetics throughout psychology and of environmental factors in why children growing up in the same family are so different. In addition, his longitudinal research has highlighted the usefulness of genetic research for understanding changes as well as continuity in development. Dr. Plomin has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research such as the Dobzhansky Memorial Award for a Lifetime of Outstanding Scholarship in Behavior Genetics and the American Psychological Society's William James Fellow Award for Outstanding Contributions to Developmental Psychology. He is currently Professor of Behavioural Genetics at the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London.

The data blitz provides an opportunity for graduate students to share findings with an audience of interested researchers. Each presentation lasts only 2 minutes, and is a great way for students to alert colleagues to their ideas and work. If you are interested in participating in the data blitz, please send a title and brief abstract (200 words or fewer) to Janet Tomiyama (tomiyama@psych.ucla.edu) by December 1, 2013. You must be registered for the pre-conference to participate in the data blitz.
We are excited to offer two $500 travel awards to graduate students on the basis of outstanding data blitz abstracts. To be considered for a travel award, please email a CV along with your data blitz submission by December 1, 2013 and indicate your interest in the travel award in your email.
The Social and Personality Health Network (SPHN) is establishing an annual Early Career Award to honor a junior scholar who has made exceptional contributions to research and/or practice that integrates social/personality and health psychology. The recipient of the award will be announced at the 2014 Pre-Conference, and the winner will be formally recognized at the 2015 Pre-Conference with a plaque and the opportunity to give an invited talk on his/her research.
Eligibility: Scholars are eligible to be nominated for this award if they have earned doctoral degree within the past 10 years (not before January, 2004). Nominators should submit a packet including a CV, a 1-2 page cover letter describing the research contributions in terms of integration of social/personality and health psychology, and 2-3 representative publications. Nomination packets should be submitted as a PDF file to sdickers@uci.edu. The deadline for the 2014 award will be December 6, 2013. Members of the SPHN Steering Committee are ineligible for the award.
Selection: There will be a 3-member committee to select the recipient of this award. It will be comprised of two committee members (one of whom will serve as chair), and the previous year's award winner (for the inaugural year of the award the President of SPHN will serve in the slot of the previous award winner). The award winner will serve on the committee for one year. The other two members will rotate on and off the committee every two years; the first year of service, s/he would be a committee member and the second year s/he would chair.
Committee members will be considered to have a conflict of interest with a) a former or current graduate student that they mentored, b) co-authors within the past 48 months, c) a scholar from their home institution, or d) family members or partners. Committee members with conflict of interest with a nominee will not be involved in the discussion or evaluation of his/her case.
Join us for the 2nd Annual SPH Pre-Pre-Conference Mixer! If you're new to the SPH Preconference, we would be delighted to get to know you, and if you're an old-timer, there's a lot of catching up to do. It will be held the night before the Preconference at a fun location, HandleBar, walkable from the convention center.
Come join your fellow SPH graduate students and faculty as we enjoy free appetizers and yummy drinks. Just because we'll be talking about health on Thursday doesn't mean we can't enjoy a little unhealthy behavior on Wednesday. In fact, we think it justifies it.
See you there!
Your hosts: Maryhope Howland and Jeff Hunger
